ICBC Active Rehabilitation at West Coast Kinetics: Supporting Your Recovery After a Car Accident

Being involved in a motor vehicle accident can have a significant impact on your physical health, mobility and overall quality of life. Whether you’re experiencing whiplash, neck or back pain, muscle stiffness, or difficulty returning to your usual activities, recovering from an accident can take time.

At West Coast Kinetics, we offer ICBC active rehabilitation services to help individuals regain their strength, improve their mobility and feel confident returning to their everyday routines.

Our registered kinesiologists provide individualized, exercise-based rehabilitation programs tailored to your injuries, goals and stage of recovery. We also offer direct billing to ICBC, helping make the rehabilitation process as straightforward as possible.

What Is ICBC Active Rehabilitation?

Active rehabilitation is a form of treatment that uses therapeutic exercise and movement to help individuals recover from injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents.

Unlike passive treatments, which may focus primarily on relieving symptoms, active rehabilitation encourages you to participate in your recovery through guided exercise.

At West Coast Kinetics, our kinesiologists work with you to develop a personalized program that may include strengthening exercises, mobility training, balance and coordination exercises, and gradual reintroduction to everyday activities.

Our goal is not only to help manage your current symptoms but also to improve your physical capacity and confidence in movement over time.

The Benefits of Exercise After a Car Accident

1. Restore Strength and Mobility

Following an accident, pain and reduced activity can contribute to muscle weakness, stiffness and decreased mobility.

A progressive exercise program can help rebuild strength, improve joint mobility and restore movement patterns needed for everyday activities.

2. Reduce Pain and Improve Function

Appropriately prescribed exercise can be an important component of managing musculoskeletal pain.

By gradually strengthening the muscles supporting affected areas and improving movement tolerance, active rehabilitation can help reduce pain-related limitations and improve overall function.

3. Build Confidence in Movement

After an injury, it’s common to feel hesitant about certain movements or activities, particularly if they have previously caused discomfort.

Our kinesiologists help you gradually reintroduce movement in a supportive environment, allowing you to rebuild confidence in your body’s capabilities.

4. Support Recovery from Whiplash and Other Injuries

Whiplash-associated disorders, neck pain, back pain and other soft-tissue injuries are common following motor vehicle accidents.

Depending on your symptoms and recovery stage, exercise-based rehabilitation can help improve neck and shoulder strength, spinal mobility, postural endurance and overall physical function.

For clients experiencing concussion-related symptoms, we can also adapt exercise programs to their individual tolerance and recovery needs, coordinating with their broader healthcare team when appropriate.

5. Return to Work, Exercise and Daily Activities

One of the most important goals of active rehabilitation is helping you return to the activities that matter most.

Whether that’s getting back to work, walking comfortably, exercising at the gym, participating in recreational sports or keeping up with your family, we tailor your program to your individual goals.

What to Expect During Your ICBC Active Rehab Sessions

Your first appointment at West Coast Kinetics begins with an assessment to better understand your injuries, current symptoms, medical and rehabilitation history, and personal goals.

Your kinesiologist will assess relevant aspects of your strength, mobility, balance and movement tolerance to help develop an appropriate exercise program.

From there, your sessions will focus on progressively improving your physical function through guided exercises, education and ongoing adjustments to your rehabilitation plan.

We understand that everyone’s recovery is different, which is why we take an individualized approach rather than using a one-size-fits-all program.

ICBC Coverage: How Many Active Rehabilitation Sessions Are Included?

If you’ve been injured in a motor vehicle accident in British Columbia, you may be eligible for ICBC-funded active rehabilitation.

Under ICBC’s Enhanced Care program, eligible individuals have access to 12 pre-approved kinesiology sessions within the first 12 weeks following their accident, regardless of who was at fault.

During this initial period, you do not need a doctor’s referral or separate ICBC approval to begin these pre-approved treatments. If you require additional sessions beyond this period, further coverage may be available with ICBC approval.

Rather than paying the covered treatment amount upfront and submitting receipts for reimbursement, we can bill ICBC directly, helping reduce the administrative burden on you.

To get started, simply contact our clinic with your ICBC claim number and Personal Health Number. Our team can help you understand the next steps, confirm your treatment eligibility and discuss any applicable fees before your first appointment.
